SO cable abrasion

If SO cables were used as permanent power sources, abrasion resistance wouldn’t matter. You’d install equipment once, pull the cable, and leave it there forever. Water resistance would be a great advantage, but abrasion concerns would be minimal. The truth is that SOW cable is often used as a temporary power source. It’s dragged over pavement to power a portable motor at a workshop. Pulled through the mud at every stop on a rock band’s tour schedule. And after all that abuse, it’s rounded up, jammed in the back of a storage unit, and expected to perform perfectly the next time.

SO cable takes a beating, and that’s why abrasion resistance is such a benefit. By virtue of a strong outer cover that protects the insulation, SO cable is heavy-duty and reliable. Thank goodness for that, because the last thing you want is for a hole to open up on the conductors. When exposed to the elements, the cable could pose a fire hazard.

Trust SO cable to retain its abrasion-resistance capability through even the toughest conditions, and then roll the flexible wire up and store it away for next time.

Why use SO cable

There are many many uses for SO cable. Thanks to the capabilities outlined below, SO cable is a favorite of everyone. Its varied uses include:

Water and oil resistant – We are not saying that your SO, SOW or SOOW cable is completely waterproof. However, as long as you have SOW or SOOW powering your application, you shouldn’t have too many problems with water intrusion issues.

Application variety – You name the temporary situation, and it is very likely SO cable has been used to power it. Coal miners trust it to provide power in the depths of their working environment . Road crews know that the cable they coil up after each concert will work just as well in the next one. And homeowners have no doubt that, should a big storm hit, their SO cable will power that generator.

What is different SOOW vs. SO cable.

Something we are frequently asked is what is the difference between SOOW cable and SO cable? Basically they are the same cable but the SOOW cable has an oil resistant conductors and outer jacket. The SO cable only has an oil resistant jacket. The voltage and temp. ratings are the same for either version. The flexibility is the same also. Most manufacturers only make the SOOW cable now as it covers most needs and building both types is not really cost effective.
